    Frequently Asked Questions

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (amended in 2002) contain strict regulations designed to protect your safety. The regulations cover all work places, not just traditional heavy industries, and cover any workplace activities.

The regulations define manual handling as: “any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or bodily force”.

That may sound like quiet a mouthful, but it means that in a very wide range of situations your employer is obliged to :-

    • Consider every aspect of your duties and eliminate any manual handling which is not absolutely necessary, and
    • Carry out a careful risk assessment for any manual handling that can’t be avoided, and
    • Minimise the risk of injury from any essential manual handling.

Manual handling accidents can result in all sorts of injuries but back injuries are particularly common, and these can be particularly serious for people with jobs that involve repeated lifting and bending.
